| Biography | Mr. Case, 39, a graduate of Princeton, Class of 1929, was elected eighth president of Washington & Jefferson College on May 4, 1946. He was inaugurated October 25 of the same year. He was born October 26, 1906, at Plainfield, New Jersey. Prior to his recent service with the United States Navy, he had been secretary of Brown University. His background included teaching, educational administration, government, business and military experience. In June 1949, he was granted a one-year leave of absence to complete a study of the problems of small, independent, liberal arts colleges. While he was still on leave, the College Board of Trustees announced his resignation March 25, 1950. He resigned to take the position as president of Bard College. He died July 11, 1965, in New York Hospital after a long illness. He was 58.
The beginning of Mr. Case's administration, Fall 1946, recorded the largest student body on record, 1047. Prior average enrollment was 500 to 550. 75% of the total enrollment were veterans of World War II. A new Division of Engineering was introduced and was housed in the former Catholic Church on the corner of Wheeling and South Lincoln Streets. Construction was begun on two new campus dormitories located on the East Beau-North Lincoln block. On October 29, 1949, Mellon Dormitory and Upperclass Dorm were dedicated. The Phi Gamma Delta Founders' Memorial Gate at the College Street entrance to Old Main Campus was also dedicated. |
