| Biography | Rev. Scott, of Wheeling, was elected president of Washington College on November 10, 1852, at a salary of $1000 per year. Although elected in November of 1852, his actual administration of the College did not begin until after his inauguration in 1853. His salary was increased to $1500 per year in 1859. He was a graduate of Jefferson College, Class of 1827. In 1862 President Scott reported that 90 students from the College and preparatory school had voluntarily joined the armed services to fight in the Civil War leaving only 45 students enrolled. By 1864, with the controversy over uniting the colleges and the location of this united college still continuing, he reported that both the faculty and student body of Washington College was greatly depleted because of the war. Rev. Scott voluntarily retired from the presidency preparatory to the union of Washington and Jefferson Colleges and continued in education at the University of West Virginia. He died July 25, 1879. |
