| Biography | Rev. Dunlap was elected second president of Jefferson College on April 27, 1803, at 140 pounds per annum plus a house and garden. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1744. He was a graduate of Princeton College and was reputed to have excelled as a teacher of languages. During his tenure the Franklin and Philo Societies were granted charters by the Board of Trustees. It was also during his tenure in 1807 that Jefferson College was approached by the Washington College Board to appoint committees for the purpose of devising a plan for the union of the two institutions. This attempt failed over disagreement over selecting a site for the "United Institution." Price of tuition during this time was 6 pounds per annum. President Dunlap resigned April 25, 1811. He died in Abingdon, Pennsylvania, on November 22, 1818, at the age of 74. |
