| Biography | Rev. Clark was elected the fifth president of Washington College on May 6, 1850. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 9, 1812. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1830 and was ordained by the Presbytery on November 8, 1837. Before and after his presidency at Washington College, he was pastor at various churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. While at Washington College he was also Professor of Mental and Moral Science, and of the Hebrew, French and German Languages and Literature. At the time of his presidency "the College Buildings consist[ed] of two large edifices, affording accommodations for boarding students, and for the recitation of the several classes. Tuition [was] $15 per session. Good Boarding [could] be had in the town and vicinity at $1.50 to $2.00 a week. In the College Building, boarding and lodging are $1.50." -Washington College Circular of 1850. Dr. Clark resigned as president on July 13, 1852. |
