Rev. Brown was elected fifth president of Jefferson College on September 25, 1822, with a salary of $800. He was born in January of 1776 in Northumberland (now Union) County, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Dickinson College in 1794. Dr. Brown had earlier been President of Washington College during "The College War." He was elected president of Jefferson College largely due to the support and influence of Rev. Dr. Samuel Ralston, president of the Board of Trustees of Jefferson College. During his presidency, Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia was established in 1824 under the charter of the College as a constituent part of Jefferson College. A new college building was erected in 1829-1832 and named Providence Hall. Under his administration 770 students were graduated. President Brown resigned in 1845 at the age of 69 due to ill health. He died on July 29, 1853.
